One of our primary goals is to create and support collaboration between organizations and groups within our community. The more we can work together, the greater our strength and the more successful our work becomes. SPC sponsors, partners, supports and promotes various community events and projects all year long.
PREVENTION OF UNDERAGE DRINKING & DRUG USE
Working to reduce the high rates of underage drinking and drug use in Seward teens, this project forcuses on community education, policy changes, and the development of meaningful activites for our youth.
Alaska suicide rates are 6 times the national average. With this in mind, SPC is beginning to tackle the issue through partnership with the Alaska Careline, education, and working to increase the connectedness climate on our school campuses.
WELLNESS FOR ALL
This organization has recently joined SPC as a branch under our umbrella. WFA focuses on the overall health and wellness of our community. They are working to combat type 2 diabetes, introducing Mindfulness-Based Stress Release to the community, and run the Seward Strong event each year.
SOURCES OF STRENGTH
This is our newest community program. It is a suicide prevention program that brings adult mentors together with student leaders to change the climate of the school. It is a positive change program that gives our youth the tools to help prevent various behavioral health issues including suicide, bullying, substance use, etc.
The Be [You] campaign was developed by the Alaska Wellness Coalition and features teens around the state who represent the majority: healthy, non-drinking teens. It showcases young Alaskans and their healthy behaviors, values and beliefs! The campaign celebrates and emphasizes the message: 78% of Alaska teens do not drink.
The campaign seeks to empower more young people to make healthy choices, ignite conversations among teens, and correct misperceptions surrounding underage drinking prevalence rates in Alaska.
